“And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8
We believe that the gospel comes with hands, feet and a heart. With that in mind, we are willing to get involved to make an impact on our surrounding community. This may come in various forms: from taking care of widows, to distributing food, to visiting those in prison. No matter what it is, it always comes with loving arms, a warm smile, and an open heart. Listed below are opportunities for you to get involved with our local outreach.
Open Hand Food Pantry - Open Hand assists the Body of Christ, whether or not they attend Washington Heights by distributing food to the “working poor.” Anyone that has needs will receive food, and there are no strings attached. Recipients simply come in and receive food from a team of volunteers.
This ministry is not merely a food handout, but it is an outreach. The relaxed environment is designed to allow free conversation between the recipients and the volunteers (if desired). Free Bibles and other Christian literature is available without pressure. Food is distributed twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th Saturday, from 10 am to 12:45 pm. Each recipient will receive enough food to last a family of five for about a week.
For more information about Open Hand, please call the church office at 801.479.7030. To volunteer for this ministry, please contact Jan at jan@washingtonheights.org.
New Hope Jail Ministry - New Hope ministers to those in our community who are confined to jails or detention centers. There are many challenges for those who are incarcerated; New Hope has found a way to demonstrate the love of God through visitations, Bible studies, support and encouragement. If you would like to know more information on how to get involved with this ministry, please contact Nicole Rodriques at nicole@washingtonheights.org.
Widows & Single Mother’s Outreach - “Religion that God our father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress.” James 1:27. The New Commandment ministry takes this verse seriously and literally. This ministry is made up of several teams that are trained to go and minister in practical ways to the widows and single moms of our church family. Every third Saturday of the month, each team goes out to the homes for approximately two to three hours helping as needed and praying with family members. New Commandment is always looking for new teams and individuals. For more information, contact Nicole Rodriques at nicole@washingtonheights.org
Tender Loving Care (TLC) - There is a need within our community to provide spiritual encouragement to those who are homebound, ill, or unable to attend church services. TLC has assembled volunteers who are committed to providing visits, prayer, Bible readings or studies, copies of the church services, and notes of encouragement. TLC’s desire is to let these individuals know that they are not alone, and they are a valuable part of the Christian community. If you know of anyone needing TLC or want to volunteer to visit others, please contact Pam Sams at pam@washingtonheights.org
