Many people believe they are not equipped to go on a foreign mission trip so they never commit and miss an amazing opportunity. What they do not realize is that all it takes is a willing heart. By stepping out and participating in a foreign mission trip you will experience love in ways never thought possible. These trips give us a perspective that we cannot understand by staying home. We believe that Jesus told us to go because He knew that in the process we would be changed.
While we believe in reaching the world, Washington Heights has chosen to focus in four specific locations: Cambodia, Guatemala, Japan and Romania. We are involved in a variety of different ministries in these countries depending on the location and need. We choose to serve under the church leadership of each country we visit and not to promote our own agenda. It is our desire to work side-by-side, experiencing true community, as we focus together on the same goal, whether building a church or just spending time with the people. Cambodia
Our first visit to Cambodia was in 2004. Ever since then, we have continued to send teams dedicated to supporting the national leadership by building churches and reaching its children. The Cambodian mission trip primarily focuses on construction, Vacation Bible School and lots of laughter. If you can pick up a hammer, play with a child, or help wash dishes this trip could be for you. Click here to watch a video.
Guatemala
Washington Heights has had a long standing relationship with the Guatemalan people. Over the past decade we have been dedicated to supporting the national leadership by building churches and reaching its children. The Guatemalan mission trip primarily focuses on construction, Vacation Bible School and lots of laughter. Japan
Less than one percent of the people of Japan are Christian. The outreach to Japanese churches focuses on friendship evangelism based on common interests. We have come alongside local churches to help teach English and present Gospel music. Both activities establish friendships between Japanese believers and nonbelievers. This allows believers over time to earn the right to share the gospel with their new friends. If you are a native English speaker or are willing to sing and clap your hands, then God can use you in Japan.
Haiti
On Jan 12, 2010 a 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti. It displaced over a million people who still struggle to survive to this day. The basic necessities of life, such as water and food, are a struggle for many. However, despite all the hardships Haiti is not without hope. There is a group of pastors who believe God is on the move and has a purpose for them.
These pastors believe the church is the central part of community, providing spiritual nourishment and educational training. With over a 100 churches destroyed, they have requested help in rebuilding the churches within their community. Romania
Each year that our church plans a mission trip to Romania, excitement begins to build. Why? Romania is a country steeped in history, culture, and oppression. By providing medical care, serving children, building relationships, and ministering to the varying cultures present in Romania, we have the opportunity to speak into the hearts of the people the freedom of the gospel of Jesus Christ. So, why Romania? Because it is God's desire that all the peoples of the world hear the Good News. Because the Romanian people are on God's heart and He has poured that love into our hearts. And, finally, because we honor God when we proclaim His name in words and deeds.
